Felt Paper vs. Synthetic Underlayment

Felt Paper vs. Synthetic Underlayment

Felt Paper (15 lb or 30 lb) vs. Synthetic Underlayment

Many homeowner’s these days are becoming more involved and do their research for their home projects. When it comes to putting on a new roof, some may wonder, why should I put on a more expensive synthetic underlayment over felt paper that has been the industry standard for decades? Let’s dig deeper and see what we can find.

According to Owens Corning, a roofing manufacturer, synthetic is 12x stronger, has extended exposure, and is more tear resistant that your standard felt paper. They also found that it is 4x lighter, which leads to few trips up the ladder and more coverage per roll. In fact, 450% more coverage per roll!

They also found that it is safer by design, having enhanced walkability and less tears around the fasteners. Synthetic has better leak protection and won’t absorb water. Felt paper has the ability for mold to grow while synthetic is inert to it.

For those with standard felt paper, don’t be scared. Your roof will still do its job. However, while standard felt paper does its job, it’s clear that the industry has developed a better product that will serve you better and help make your roof last longer.
